Since 2007, JSRCC Library users have been able to check out and download OverDrive audio books to enjoy on a personal computer or MP3 player. The VCCS OverDrive download site is available 24/7 from anywhere in the world. Popular and classic downloadable books are offered in a variety of subjects, including mystery, romance, science fiction, business and careers, self-improvement, and more.

Now, VCCS Libraries offers even greater access to the OverDrive download service through a mobile device-optimized website coupled with software for downloading and listening on the go. A mobile version of the VCCS OverDrive download site is now available. This mobile version allows easy browsing, searching, and checkout from your Smartphone, Blackberry®, or other web-enabled device. Windows Mobile (5 or newer) users can wirelessly download audiobooks to their mobile device using OverDrive® Media Console for Windows Mobile. Android™ device owners can install a beta version of OverDrive Media Console to download OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks. To download audio books on your mobile device, you’ll also need an Internet connection and a MyVCCS login.

New digital audiobooks, videos, and music!


Over 300 new titles have been added to our OverDrive digital media collection of audiobooks, videos, and music.  These digital resources can be downloaded on your home computer, a compatible portable device or burned to a CD.  Each title will clearly indicate what your downloading options are.  You will need to download the OverDrive Media Console software to play any media from this collection.  Items are checked out to you using your – My JSRCC login.  You can have up to 2 titles checked out at any one time.

World Digital Library

world-digital-libraryOn Tuesday, April 21st, “The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and 32 partner institutions (including the Library of Congress)  . . . launched the World Digital Library, a website that features unique cultural materials from libraries and archives from around the world.  The site includes . . . manuscripts, maps, rare books, films, sound recordings, prints and photographs. It provides unrestricted public access, free of charge, to this material.” (Library of Congress News Release)

This “globe-spanning U.N. digital library (seeks) to display and explain the relics of all human cultures . . . serving up mankind’s accumulated knowledge in seven languages for students around the world. . . James H. Billington, the librarian of Congress who launched the project four years ago, said the ambition was to make available on an easy-to-navigate site, free for scholars and other curious people anywhere, a collection of primary documents and authoritative explanations from the planet’s leading libraries.” (Edward Cody, Washington Post article

Meet Herbert Hill

He’s been around for about six weeks now, but we haven’t properly introduced Herbert Hill, our new library specialist. Herb will be Downstairs Guy in the new Parham campus library as he is in charge of stack maintenance. A very obliging fellow, Herb is shown in this picture assembling one of the new spinning display racks for our DVD and audiobooks-on-CD collection.

Streaming Videos from Encyclopaedia Britannica

Check out the over 3,000 streaming videos from Encyclopaedia Britannica that cover a variety of subjects, including History, Science, the Arts, and Social Studies.  To access the streaming videos collection from Encyclopaedia Britannica’s home page, click on Video Collection from the Research Tools menu on the left.

Here is just a sampling of video topics: Toulouse-Lautrec, Botticelli, Lewis & Clark, Asia, Ancient Cultures, World Wars, Economics, Native Americans, Insects, the Chaos Theory, and the expanding Universe.
